Unconditional Love

While I was working as a paramedic in Ohio, our station had a patient who called 911 for medical assistance frequently. The patients’ complaints ranged from minor aches and pains to seizures. The patient was morbidly obese with a long list of medical conditions and medications prescribed for the conditions. The patient had a sister who moved in with him approximately one year after our EMS station was introduced to him. Our station was still called to the patient’s home after his sister moved in but the frequency of calls decreased dramatically. The patients’ sister pleaded her love for her brother and told us her goal in life was to improve his health. After hearing the plea, my EMS station began encouraging this patient and providing support in many different ways. As a result of our help and his sister’s love, the patient was able to lose 285 pounds and cut his medication list in half. I am convinced this patient would have found himself admitted to a nursing home or succumb to his obesity and medical conditions had his sister not intervened with unconditional love for her brother.
